Thoughtful design is all in the details.

As home decorators, a lot of time is spent analyzing paint colors, picking out furnishings and weighing lighting options. But it is the little things like a string of wooden beads toppling out of an aged pottery bowl or the arrangement of vintage books on a shelf that really inject personality and character into a space.

These are the details that transform a house into your home.

Look at any professionally styled living room and you'll likely see at least one throw casually draped over the arm the sofa or folded over the back. Yet many never consider adding this utilitarian accessory to their own room or at least not as a planned decor piece.

Throw blankets are an underappreciated hero in the design of a cozy space. Like adding a necklace to an outfit, they might not be necessary, but become that final touch to make your living area feel complete.

Read on to learn the styling secrets behind achieving the look of a  perfectly tossed throw to evoke feelings of cozy comfort in your family room.

Why Throw Blankets are Necessary When Decorating Your Living Room

Aside from the obvious warmth a cozy throw brings on a cold winter day, there are decorative benefits to draping a throw or two (or three!) throughout your living room.

  • Dress up a bare sofa

  • Add a splash of color, texture, and pattern

  • Easy, inexpensive way to freshen a room

  • Inject the feeling of a lived in space where guests can relax and feel at home.

Folded or Tossed

While there are many ways to actually style a throw, there are two basic options to consider.....Do you want it folded or tossed?

Neatly folding a throw over the back or arm of sofas and chairs lends a formal, sophisticated mood to your living room. It is a traditional look and more polished and orderly when compared to the alternative.

On the other hand, purposefully draping a throw blanket conveys a more relaxed, casual  look. It does take a bit more finesse to get just right, but just remember that it will never look perfect and that is the point of the effortless throw. Just toss, make a slight adjustment if needed, and walk away.

8 Ideas for Styling Decorative Throws in the Living Room

Here are a few ideas for artfully arranging your throw blankets as a piece of decor in your living room.

Over the Arm Fold

Likely the easiest and most fuss-free of all throw styling options involves neatly folding the blanket into thirds or fourths the long way, then in half going the opposite direction before draping it up and over the arm of the couch (or chair).

Make sure that the blanket doesn't extend past the bottom of the couch and that any fringe or detailed edging hangs down along the side. This is a great option if the side of your sofa is visible when entering the room and is easy to grab when needed.

Cozy Arm Drape

Perhaps the more casual version of the "Over the Arm Fold," this display is one that encourages you to sit down and cover up. Simply grab the throw about one foot from any corner and drape it over the arm of the sofa, allowing the majority of the throw to drape down onto the seat extending to the floor.

Because of the relaxed nature of this option, it can puddle in front of the sofa if needed.

Waterfall Fold

Fold your throw into thirds or fourths lengthwise, then tuck one end just over the back of the couch, draping the rest over the back cushions, onto the seat, and down towards the floor. Tuck the blanket back so the it sits tight along the contours of the sofa cushions.

This look can be positioned in the middle of the sofa or off to one side. For a more casual alternative, position the top of the throw in the corner and tuck it back into where the seat, arm and back meet. Feel free to add a throw to an accent chair in a similar fashion.

Waterfall Drape

Similar to the formal waterfall fold, for this more relaxed look, grab one corner of the blanket, laying it behind the top of the seat and draping the rest of the blanket down over the back, the seat cushion and down towards the floor. Gently tuck the blanket back into the contours of the sofa and adjust as necessary for that unkept, lived in feeling.

This looks best set off-center on the back of the sofa or in the corner.

Back of Sofa

Displaying a throw across the back of your sofa is ideal in rooms with an open concept layout where the backside of the sofa is on display and you'd like to dress it up.

Fold the blanket in half once widthwise and then lay it along the back of the sofa behind the seat cushions. (This method doesn't work well when the sofa has attached cushions.) Look for a throw that will cover about 2/3 of the length of the couch.

For an additional wow factor, you can even layer one decorative throw on top of another larger coordinating blanket.

Back of Chair

Displaying a throw on the back of a chair is a nice look in spaces where there is traffic flow around the furniture. Fold the throw in fourths lengthwise, in half widthwise and then over the top of your chair for  quick, pulled together styling.

At Your Feet

There are three alternatives to laying  a throw at the foot of you chaise. You can neatly fold the blanket and lay it across the end portion of the chaise with the ends barely touching the floor. You can drape it across the width of the chaise and scrunch up the fabric for the ultimate casual look. Or grab one corner about a third of the way down and give it a simple toss onto the furniture.

Folded on the Seat

Fold the blanket lengthwise into thirds, in half widthwise, then one more time not quite in half, leaving it just a little bit longer on the backside so that it can lay casually down the front of the sofa.

A Few Things to Remember About Incorporating Throws into Your Decor

There are a couple of tips to keep in mind as you begin intentionally decorating with decorative throws in your living room.

  • Chunkier Throws are Better for Casual Styling
Heavier weight throws tend to not fold well, so they usually are better for draping and tossing on your sofas and side chairs.

  • Distance to the Ground
Generally, you should make sure your folded throws do not extend past the bottom of the sofa to keep things looking neat and polished. More casual drapes, however, can be carefree and graze the ground.

  • Some Adjusting May Be Necessary
After you are done laying out your blanket, you'll likely need to make some slight adjustments. Things like making sure tags are hidden, tucking the throw back into the contours of your sofa or chair, and doing a little added fluffing all add to the polished look of your styled throw.

  • Don't Forget About the Pillows
For a completely styled sofa, don't forget about adding a few decorative pillows to coordinate with the throw. Play around with whether you like the look of the pillows sitting directly on the blanket, or if you prefer them displayed along the side.

  • There is No Right or Wrong
Taking the time to add the decorative detail of throw blankets in your living room design can be a little intimidating because there are so many options and perfection seems hard to attain. But remember, it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. The more casual it looks, the cozier your space will feel.  In the end, it is just a blanket, and however you choose to display it will not be wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Throws Should I Use In the Living Room at One Time?

The number of blankets you include in your space in part depends on the size of your room. A larger, open concept living area can hold more throw blankets without looking cluttered than a small enclosed room.

But as a general rule of thumb it is best to include at least two - one on the sofa and one on a nearby chair. Choose blankets that coordinate in terms of style, pattern, and color. Any extra can be stored.

What Do You Do With "Not-So-Pretty-But-Useful" Blankets?

The comfy blankets you use when lounging or sick typically are not the stylish variety that enhance the look of your room, but  are necessary to keep close by.

They can be stored away inside a lidded storage option, hidden underneath a "pretty" blanket in an open basket, or folded inside of a storage ottoman. You could even try layering a decorative throw over top the much-loved one to keep it easily accessible, but hidden!

During the Summer Months, What Happens to Your Throw Blankets?

You don't have to remove all the throw blankets from the living room just because the temperatures are rising. Remember blankets do more than just provide warmth!

Look for lighter colors and lightweight materials to transition your styling for the summer. Think cream colored linens over heavy plaid wool.

The small detail of an artfully tossed throw blanket can have a dramatic effect on the overall design of your space without the need to accumulate more. Take advantage of this typically missed opportunity in decorating to create a thoughtful and cozy home in any season.
