If your cleaning caddy is overflowing with bottles you barely recognize, you’re not alone. Many store-bought cleaners are filled with harsh chemicals and overpowering scents. The good news? It’s easy to make your own effective, nontoxic cleaners with just a few simple ingredients. This post will show you how to get started.

When it comes to designing a beautiful home, every detail matters.

We think carefully about paint colors, textiles, and lighting, but the way we care for those spaces is just as important as how they look. A clean, fresh home shouldn’t come at the cost of harsh chemicals or overwhelming fragrances. It should feel as intentional and considered as the design choices themselves.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the number of plastic bottles under your sink or uncertain about the ingredients inside them, you’re not alone. More and more people are trading harsh chemicals for something better - simple, effective cleaners made from a handful of natural ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.

Homemade cleaners aren’t just a healthier alternative; they’re also a quiet nod to a slower, more intentional way of living. The kind where cleaning becomes a ritual, not a chore. Where your home feels like a refuge not just in the way it looks, but in the way it’s cared for.

If you’ve been curious about making the switch, here’s how to get started. It’s easier than you might think.

Why Make Your Own Cleaners?

The biggest motivator to exploring non-toxic options is peace of mind.

So many conventional cleaners contain ingredients that are hard to pronounce, let alone understand. And when you’re cleaning countertops where your kids snack or spraying down a table before a family meal, you want to know that what you’re using is safe.

Homemade cleaners give you complete control. You know exactly what’s going into them…..and what’s not.

Plus, there’s something so satisfying about returning to the basics. A bottle filled with white vinegar, water, and a few drops of essential oil feels refreshingly pure. You’re caring for your home in a way that’s simple, natural, and timeless.

Tbe Basics: Ingredients You'll Use Again and Again

Here are the essentials to always keep on hand. These ingredients are affordable, easy to find, and work well:

  • White Vinegar: Naturally antibacterial, cuts through grease, and neutralizes odors.

  • Baking Soda: Gently abrasive for scrubbing sinks, tubs, and stovetops.

  • Castile Soap: A plant-based soap that’s gentle but powerful and great for almost everything. Use it for dishes, floors, counters, or even a DIY foaming hand soap. It’s concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

  • Essential Oils: Add fragrance naturally. Lemon, lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree are some go-tos. Use alone or create a custom blend.

  • Distilled Water: Keeps your cleaners free from mineral buildup and extends shelf life.

  • Glass Spray Bottles: Durable, refillable, and a simple upgrade from cluttered plastic containers. They keep your space feeling streamlined and organized.

A Few Favorite Recipes

These are simple formulas to reach for again and again. They work just as well as anything store-bought, and homemade cleaners can look tidy and purposeful when corralled in a tray or basket.

All-Purpose Surface Cleaner

Perfect for countertops, tables, and just about anything.

  • 1 cup distilled water

  • 1 cup white vinegar

  • 1 Tablespoon Castile soap

  • 10–15 drops lemon or lavender essential oil

Shake gently before each use.

Streak-Free Glass Spray

Works well on windows, mirrors, and anything glass.

  • 1 cup distilled water

  • 1 cup white vinegar

  • 1 Tablespoon rubbing alcohol

  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)

Spray lightly and wipe with a lint-free cloth.

Soft Scrub for Sinks + Tile

Gentle, effective, and perfect for tough spots.

  • ½ cup baking soda

  • 2 Tablespoons Castile soap

  • A splash of water to form a paste

Apply with a cloth or sponge, then rinse clean.

Floor Cleaner

Safe for wood and tile alike.

  • 1 gallon warm water

  • ¼ cup white vinegar

  • 1 Tablespoon Castile soap

  • 10 drops lemon essential oil

Use with a damp mop. No rinsing required.

Linen Spray

Use to refresh soft surfaces such as bedding, rugs, and curtains.

  • 4 Tablespoons rubbing alcohol

  • 20-40 drops essential oil(s)

  • 2/3 cup distilled water

Lightly mist over fabric. Always test a small area first, especially with delicate fabrics.

Tips for an Elevated Cleaning Routine

Creating a space you love goes beyond design. It’s in how you care for it. These little shifts help make cleaning feel less like a task to check off your to-do list and more like part of the rhythm of a well-loved home.

  • Keep it cohesive. Matching glass bottles, natural brushes, and labeled jars can make your cleaning supplies feel like an extension of your design style.

  • Choose scents intentionally. Essential oils do more than just smell good. They shift the mood. Use lavender for calm, eucalyptus to clear the air, and citrus for energy.

  • Make it a ritual. Open the windows, turn on your favorite playlist, and give yourself permission to slow down. Cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be a way to reconnect with your home.

  • Start with one cleaner at a time. You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Begin with one cleaner, maybe the all-purpose spray, and build from there.

  • Display beautiful tools. If it brings you joy, keep a few of your prettiest items visible like a vintage bottle brush, a linen towel, a jar of baking soda with a brass scoop. Tools don’t have to be boring.

At anderson + grant, we believe in elevating the everyday, whether that’s through a home-cooked meal, a well-made bed, or a freshly scrubbed countertop. A beautiful home isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it feels.

Making your own nontoxic cleaners isn’t just about avoiding harsh chemicals. It’s about aligning your daily routines with the kind of life you’re trying to build: slow, intentional, and rooted in care.
