January 1, 2020.

Is it just me or does it seem like it was only yesterday that the world was worried about what would happen with Y2K?  And now here we are 20 years later.  There is most definitely truth to the saying "The days are long, but the years are short."

Although I'm always looking forward to the start of a new year and the clean slate and fresh outlook that it brings, this year it is more true than ever.  I have literally been waiting for this day for months!  Believe me when I say that things are about to get really exciting here on the blog.

For the past four months or so, I have been working nonstop behind the scenes to set everything up for a seriously amazing and inspiring year (and beyond ;) ).  Whether you're interested in the actual renovations of my fixer upper, learning how to decorate your home, following along with some DIY projects to do yourself, or spending  time in the kitchen, there will be something for you to enjoy.

Snowy tree in winter

Last year kicked off with a before tour of my fixer upper and while windows, doors, and siding were installed, progress moved along ever so slowly indoors over the course of the year.

Well, the living room is now almost done and more rooms are on the way in various stages of demo at the moment.  Over the upcoming months, you'll get to see different rooms unfold from the before to the after starting this month with the living room.

I plan on focusing on all the downstairs rooms you saw in the before tour and then in the fall take a much deserved reno break before doing the bedrooms, landscaping outside, and eventually tackling the basement next year.  Of course, if last year taught me anything, it was probably that "We plan.  God laughs."  In my original plan, the living room was supposed to be the "easy" room and now here we are close to a year later and it's not done yet!

A couple of years ago, I attached the tagline "Learning to make a home" to my blog, but never quite developed it the way that I had hoped.  But that changes this year.

With things coming together at the house, I'm finally able to see the dream behind my blog blossom.  There are so many things that can go into making your house a home and I want to help inspire you with what I'm doing and learning as well as teach some of the basics for those of you who are unsure of where to begin.  There is nothing more frustrating than seeing all those beautiful pictures and ideas out there when you lack the confidence, time, or budget to try them yourself.

In addition to the renovation posts, I have a bunch of decorating and DIY posts planned to inspire you to freshen up your own homes.  There are a few really fun series that I'm starting that I think you're going to love.  Plus, some step-by-step decorating basics,  low-cost (or no cost) DIY projects, and other ways to add a custom touch to make your house a home.

I'm also working on some recipes and tutorials to help you in the kitchen.

I'm freshening things up here at my online home, too.  Depending on when you read this post, the new design may or may not be up, but it is happening at some point this week.  You'll have to bear with things for a short time as all the glitches that come with a new design are worked out and some new features are added.

Some things are the same, but I've tried to design my blog so that you can find exactly what you're looking for easily and quickly.  While I of course want to keep things "pretty," my main goal was to make them very functional, especially when you're using a mobile device to view my blog as many of you are.

If you take a look at my homepage, you'll find the newest posts right there at the top, but then you can explore by different categories and topics of interest further down.  Also, there is a little magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of your screen that will allow you to search for something specific regardless of what page your find yourself on.

As I already mentioned, this month is going to be focused on the living room.  On Sundays, I'll be sharing the progress of how the room came together as well as the faux fireplace that I built from scratch and absolutely love.  There will also be posts to help you along with designing your own living room and making things exactly how you want them.

I'm going to be showing you how I made some of the decor in the room like easy picture ledge shelves and giant photo art on canvas.

I'll also be transforming some old southwest style clay vessels into the increasingly popular "stoneware" vases with just paint.  I've had my eye on different ones like this one from McGee & Co, but haven't been willing to pay the price.  I can't wait to show you this before and after because I couldn't be happier with how they turned out and I know some of you will want to give the DIY a try as well.

If you're at a loss when it comes to exactly how to put decor together to create a vignette, then my new "Style Recipe" series will be for you.  In it, I'm going to show you the framework of basic displays and how you can add in your own decor following the same "recipe" for a completely different look.

And finally, there will be soup, appetizer and cookies recipes perfect for the cold winter season.

I am a behind the camera girl.  But, I realize how important (and enjoyable) being able to watch content has become.  So this year, I hope to begin producing videos to accompany some of my DIY and decorating posts, in addition to my room reveals.  This is pushing my way out of my comfort zone, but I'm also really excited about it.

To ease into things, there will  be short "progress" videos popping up on Instagram Stories for those of you who enjoy that platform.  And eventually I plan on doing longer, more polished video content that will be available here in my posts.  You can also subscribe to my YouTube channel to find everything in one place.

Fingers crossed, I plan on opening an online shop later on this year.  Back in 2013 when I started blogging I did some online sales for awhile, but then got away from keeping up with everything that retail requires.

But I've been gathering some really interesting one-of-a-kind vintage finds over the past year, as well as some other great decor for your home that I can't wait to be able to share with you.

I'm aiming for things to come together in time to begin purchasing for the fall decorating season.  I'll likely release a collection of items at the beginning of each month so that you'll know when to check back to see the new inventory.

I hope that this little glimpse into the month (and year) has gotten you excited for what is to come.  I'll be popping back in tomorrow with a free printable 2020 calendar.  (I've had quite a few requests from those of you who have used my design in the past.) And then I probably take one more week to regroup from the holidays before coming back with the first glimpse of the living room for the year.

Be sure to subscribe to my blog so that you don't miss a thing.  You can also follow along with me on Instagram for  behind the scenes peeks, everyday living, and quick tips.  And Pinterest is where I share some of my favorite inspiration from other bloggers and websites, along with my own content of course.
