"Fixer Upper"....My New Favorite Show

In the past, I've shared a few of my favorite renovation shows with you (Sarah's House and Rehab Addict) and now I've got another one to add to the top of the list.  I'm totally crushing on the show "Fixer Upper," which also airs on HGTV.   Have you been watching it?
The show aims to "pick the worst house in the best neighborhood," and by the end there is no doubt that it is now probably one of the best houses.

Mixed Berry Ice Cream Sandwiches

Do you love ice cream sandwiches? Visit www.andersonandgrant.com for a delicious recipe for Mixed Berry Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Ice cream sandwiches are delicious and a perfect summer treat.  I've decided to take the dessert up a notch by making it myself and adding a special ingredient.....dried mixed berries.  These dried berries can be found in your grocery store with the dried cranberries, apricots, and prunes and they really taste exceptional when mixed into this chocolate cookie.

Serving Ice Cream Sandwiches for Your Fourth of July Party

Tips for a Dessert Table at your Fourth of July Party from www.andersonandgrant.com

When you are entertaining, the presentation of what you are serving is just about as important as the taste of the food.  Your guest love to see that you've taken the time to put that extra special touch on your meal or party.

Today, I'm sharing two posts for you.  I put together a recipe for mixed berry ice cream sandwiches that I think you will love.  And as I was preparing the delicious dessert, I thought it might be fun to share some tips for serving the treat to your guests at any upcoming Fourth of July or summer parties that you might be having.

Tearing Down a Piece from My Childhood

Twenty two years ago, my dad built a playhouse for me in the backyard.  It was my own little "log cabin" next to the woods.  The logs were actually picket fence boards, and the cabin was framed just like a real house with real roof shingles.  There were plexi-glass windows on the sides that could be removed to let the fresh air inside.   It was decorated with curtains on the windows and an upholstered bench for sitting.   There was even a fake Coleman lantern hanging inside for "light."

From Bad to Worse

About a month ago, I shared with you some pieces I purchased at a yard sale.  I'm sorry to say that they've all been sitting in my shed since I bought them.  I think the task of transforming anything that is in rough shape, while incredibly exciting in terms of creativity, can be a little draining when you know the work that is ahead.  I finally decided to bite the bullet and start transforming the little desk....not because it was the best or worst of all the purchases, but because it was the easiest one to get out of the shed. :)

How to Use Coffee Grounds as Fertilizer

Healthy plants need food just like we do.  There is a free fertilizer out there for your garden that you may just be throwing away without realizing it.
After brewing a pot of coffee, you can add the used grounds to your garden rather than discarding them in the trash.  It's a great example of some useful recycling and repurposing!
Acid loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, roses, and blueberry and tomato plants love the additional nitrogen and other trace elements that the coffee grounds contribute.  I don't always remember to do it like I should, but I've been trying to remember to add the grounds to the soil around my azaleas for quite a few years.

Blueberry Pie with a Twisted Lattice Crust

Delicious homemade blueberry pie with a twisted lattice crust.....Add a scoop of ice cream and you've got a perfect dessert for a summer day! www.andersonandgrant.com #pie #Marthastewart

When I think of the Fourth of July, I think of blueberries.  I don't know why.....maybe it is because it is a summer fruit for a summer holiday.  Maybe it is because they are blue and if your throw in some raspberries you are on your way to a red, white, and blue theme.  Whatever the reason, I felt like today is the perfect day for sharing a recipe for a delicious blueberry pie.  It is so incredibly easy to make.  Plus, it has a really interesting twisted lattice crust, which for someone who thinks the presentation of food is everything, puts this pie over the top of being perfect.

Must Have Pie Crust Recipe

Find out how to make the perfect crust for your next pie with just a few simple ingredients.

I believe that I may have found the best recipe yet for pie crust. It is fairly simple to make, rolls out nicely, and makes more than enough dough for two 9-inch pie crusts. | www.andersonandgrant.com

Most people either consider themselves to be great at making pie crust or think they can't do it well at all.  While making crust can be tricky, your ability lies more in the recipe itself and what is done with the dough rather than any skills that you might or might not possess.

There are some recipes that turn out drier than others.  Some don't seem to make quite enough dough to fill the pie tin or allow enough extra to make a beautiful edge on your crust.  And if the dough isn't chilled properly, it could shrink when the crust is put in the oven to bake, ruining anything decorative that was done with the pastry.

A Thought for the Day

Yesterday I saw a thought provoking post from Jess Lively about facing challenges intentionally that I thought was worth sharing with you....
Wouldn't life be better if we could remember this when we have a problem?  Be sure to check out her post if you need a little inspiration about rebounding from negative circumstances.

Transforming a Broken Picnic Basket

This great decorative basket was made by removing the lid and handles from an old picnic basket.....Now it is a great storage place for a quilt, some magazines, or flowers! | www.andersonandgrant.com

What do you do with a picnic basket that has only one handle?  That has been a question I've been trying to answer for more than five years.....and no, I'm not exaggerating!  If you have been reading this blog for long, I'm sure that you've caught on that most of the time it takes me months (and obviously sometimes years) to figure out what to do with things that I've purchased for DIY projects.  Today's transformation is no different.

My Weekend Project

Yesterday, I mentioned that I've been working on some outdoor projects.  One of those projects is repainting my outdoor dining table and chairs.  It was purchased quite a few years ago, but is still in perfect condition other than having some rust spots and chipping paint.

DIY Transformation | Painted Salad Bowls

DIY Hand painted and distressed wood salad bowl from www.andersonandgrant.com

With all the large pieces and unique finds that I've been transforming lately, I thought it was about time to return to a DIY we can all do.  Back at the beginning of the year I shared a few projects using supplies I picked up at Goodwill (or flea markets, yard sales, etc.)  Today is another one of those  fabulous projects!

Trash to Treasure | Chalkboard Message Center

DIY Chalkboard Message Center from www.andersonandgrant.com

One of my favorite things to do is to refurbish "junk" into something else.  Sometimes, the junk has to sit awhile before I figure out what to do with it, but eventually I come up with something.  I love the challenge of figuring out another use for something I've purchased.

Cheddar Stuffed Potatoes

Recipe for Cheddar Stuffed Potatoes | www.andersonandgrant.com

I get tired of eating the same baked potatoes, french fries, and mashed potatoes with every meal.  Sometimes I'm looking for something a little different.  These stuffed potatoes aren't much more work than a traditional baked potato, but the taste is AMAZING!  Plus, you can easily change the flavor a little by substituting a different cheese or using some different spices.
